My Opinion: Logical Equivalence & Cholesterol
Since you are already reading my website, you are obviously more intelligent than 99% of the American population. So it will come to no surprise to you that most Americans are absolutely clueless when it comes to logic.
And by logic I am referring to mathematical logic ... truth tables and all that. If you’ve forgotten your freshman logic course, don’t worry. I don’t expect anyone reading (except for maybe the mathematicians/physicists) to really remember the details of logic.
But if you think back to your logic class you will remember a concept known as logical equivalence. This means that two statements are identical, at least in truth value.
Example:
All humans need oxygen to live.
This is a true statement.
An organism NOT requiring oxygen to live is NOT a human.
This is also a true statement. In fact it is the logically equivalent contrapositive statement of the first statement. It must be so! Otherwise someone, somewhere would be able to live without oxygen. Thus it is logically equivalent to say either all humans need oxygen to live or if it lives without oxygen then it is not human.
Why do I bring this up? Because the whole cholesterol lowering scam is getting ridiculous, that’s why.
Statement:
High cholesterol is associated with heart attacks.
This appears to be a true statement (although some alternative medicine people would disagree).
Western medicine:
Low cholesterol reduces the risk of heart attack.
NO! NO! NO! A thousand times NO! You illiterate ‘tards didn’t pay attention to your logic instructor. The two statements above are NOT logically equivalent. The second statement is what is known as the inverse of the first statement. Inverse statements are not logically equivalent. Let me give you an example why:
Example:
All dogs have hair.
This is a true statement. Even hairless Chihuahuas have some hair.
Inverse Statement:
If it’s not a dog, it doesn’t have hair.
This is false. Cats are not dogs, but they have hair. Squirrels are not dogs, but they have hair. The inverse is not logically equivalent.
Contrapositive Statement:
If it doesn’t have hair, then it is not a dog.
This is true. If all dogs have hair & you find an animal without hair, then it is definitely NOT a dog.
Back to the question of cholesterol drugs.
Cholesterol Statement:
High cholesterol increases the risk of heart attack.
Assume this is true.
Cholesterol Statement Inverse:
Low cholesterol reduces the risk of heart attack.
NO! That is a false statement logically. The inverse statement is not logically equivalent.
Contrapositive Cholesterol Statement:
Reduced risk of heart attack is associated with low cholesterol.
This is true. But it does NOT say that lowering cholesterol reduces the risk of heart attack. It simply restates that high cholesterol is associated with heart attack & those with low cholesterol had lower rates of heart attack. Do you see the difference?
Example:
78 Gunshots to the head causes death.
True.
Inverse:
Preventing 78 gunshots to the head will prevent death.
Absolutely FALSE. Accidents, disease, knives, baseball bats & animal attacks will also cause death.
Contrapositive:
If you are not dead, then you were not shot 78 times in the head.
This is true.
Here’s where Big Med & Big Pharma sock it to the “dumbed down” American people. They convince the public that lowering cholesterol will lower the risk of heart attack. But it’s not true! It’s not even logically equivalent! All lowering cholesterol does is blow out your liver with high $$$$$ Lipicrap and other Big Pharma nonsense. Cholesterol lowering drugs have NEVER been shown to reduce the risk of future heart attacks. Lowering your homocysteine levels has been shown to slow/prevent atherosclerosis. Take B vitamins & eat veggies. Big Pharma’s #1 money makers are cholesterol drugs!
